Did I mention that I went skydiving over the weekend? ‘Cause I did.
Fact: 14,000ft above Byron Bay, you can see all the way to Surfer’s Paradise.
Fact: 14,000ft above Byron Bay, there are many more beautiful things to look at than Surfer’s Paradise.
Fact: If you’re a little knock-kneed and pidgeon-toed on land, you will still be a little knock-kneed and pidgeon-toed 14,000ft above Byron Bay. Lily insists she knew that tiny speck in the fourth photo was me based simply on this fact. Hmph.
Free-falling for around 60 seconds at over 200km/hr is incredible, but it’s the minutes after the parachute is opened, as you float calmly over the most beautiful landscape you’ve seen - the only landscape you’ve ever seen like this, with your own eyes - and breath the crisp morning air set aside only for birds and the brave; that’s when you feel it.
I can’t really explain what ‘it’ is yet, but it’s the reason people like the guy strapped to my back do this every day. As much as they’d like you to believe it’s all about the adrenaline, it’s not. ‘It’ is something bigger than that. ‘It’ takes your breath away. ‘It’ shows you how small you really are but how beautiful that is, and I’m going to try and find ‘it’ everywhere I go.
